Re: Expected duration of published scenarios

It varies a lot by the group's playstyle and number of players. My group is fairly small at 3 players but we tend to be quite meticulous and thorough. We spent 8 hours over 2 sessions on Witches' Dance, which I think some groups finish in 2-3 hours. I think your best bet is to use the benchmark you ...

Re: Player knocked about.

That's not how that works... Healing potions are rare and expensive (60 silver per level, p379) and have limited effect (p272). Unless you want to casually hand out potions worth 500+ silver, look elsewhere for healing. A good healer (whether a player character or an NPC they visit) can add several ...

Re: Witch questions

I would see this as having a base emotional attitude towards the spell in a given moment that ranges from -2 to +2. Additionally, the witch can spend up to 2 rounds to channel her emotions and improve her attitude modifier by up to +2 in that way (but not above the maximum of +2 total). I see the fr...

Re: Banish Light Liturgical Chant questions

I'm not aware of any official word on this, but here is how I would rule it: ⋅ The blessed one can select a radius up to QLx3 yards, to about 1 yard of accuracy. The blessed one cannot adjust the radius once the chant is in effect. ⋅ I'd say it doesn't go through walls/floors/cei...

Re: Summoning during combat

I share that point of view. Timing aside, summoning a demon is very risky outside of controlled circumstances and has been that way since at least 3rd edition. It used to involve a check on your level (roll a d20, get a number less or equal to your level to pass) with penalties in order to control t...

Re: Understanding Applications

In practice, most of the time they don't seem to matter much. I've only seen two areas where the application is relevant compared to just the base skill: ⋅ A player has a skill specialization or other bonus for a specific application ⋅ The application is restricted, e.g. a trade ...

Re: Starting with No tradition

It wouldn't be canon to slowly train a spellcaster as the game progresses, but I don't think it will cause any problems either. I've done this before with a character who started out as essentially an emotional intuitive caster and slowly grew towards becoming a witch. This formed a significant part...

Re: How often do fate points return?

In my group each player gets 1 FtP at the start of every session, plus full FtP after completing a scenario or major milestone (typically every 3-4 sessions). For a while we had a character with Luck II; to make that expensive advantage stand out more we decided to give him an additional FtP every s...

Re: Thrusting weapons

In melee combat, a spear is basically used like a quarterstaff with a pointy bit on one end. There's a lot more to it than just poking the other guy, which is why it's rightfully grouped in the same weapon class as staves. Even weapons that are almost exclusively piercing, like the foil, require roo...

Effects of triple-1 skill checks

What do you do to make your triple-1 on a skill check truly memorable? After about a year of playing, we've had our first triple-1 in our group yesterday. Unfortunately, it was on an utterly mundane skill check: The character was rolling on Law to determine who would be in charge of an ongoing local...
