Cost of trained animals

Postby Alukar » Sat May 27, 2017 4:55 pm

One of my player want to fill that animal spot on the character sheet.
My first answer was to be really good in animal lore and to spend a lot of time training one.
But now he want to buy one.
How can i have an idea how much it cost to buy a trained animal assuming it is available.
I can see 750 Silverhalers for a horse in the core rule book.
What about some kind of bird, a combat trained dog or maybe a bear?
I guess it depends the tricks the animal can do.

Someone can help? :)

There is also a question of balance.
I'm afraid it would be OP to have a trained animal. It could be stronger than one of my players. Any thoughts about this?

add 50% for "follow me" pet training.
make it double or more (depending on rarity) for a battle , hunting or special training animal.
Bears? dancing bear for entertainment? sure. Everything else is unheard of.
wardogs can be found in the rules.

I, for one would expect the dog to have some obeisance training.

Let them go for it. You should hope they're dumb enough to get something "stronger" than one of the players. Let them enjoy getting a trained war-bear and having it tear up stuff.

Then remember that a trained animal is still an animal. Let them let it take the lead exploring some underground wilderness area. Then have a zombie or skeleton pop up and watch that bear freak the fuck out and tear its way through the party members trying to escape the horrible, unnatural undead thing that just freaked it the fuck out.

There's probably a nasty alchemist out there with the formula for Instant Bear Rabies Elixir.

I bet there's probably quite a few spells that can affect beings with low SAG and INT attributes, which animals, not being sentient, are likely to have.

Don't say "No" to your players. Say "Sure you can try that." Just try not to lick your lips and rub your hands with too much malicious anticipation. It might scare them into backing off and where's the fun in that?

For the record, I'm a player who just got the Dark Eye Core Rules. I haven't even made my first character, but I've had a lot of experience in other games and stuff like the above should always be on the table.
