The Warriors Diploma

Postby Morgoth » Sat Jun 11, 2016 4:13 am

So, what exactly are the benefits of the Warriors Diploma? There are a few snippets given, but nothing in more detail. (I remember having this question since the old The Dark Eye Basic rules were released in English by Fanpro :D )

The Warrior Profession starts out with it, but since the professions are for easier character generation and not really required, how would you determine starting out with a Diploma if a player generates a character completely from scratch? Is it purely background info, but if so what is to stop someone from making say, a Mage but stating he spent a few years in the Warriors Academy, giving him a few points in the Sword combat technique and thus justifying getting a Warriors Diploma?

(I know a Narrator can simply deny anything a player comes up, but just saying)

Well the most important thing would be, that everyone with a warrior diploma has the right to bear arms. So if a character like a thief runs around with a big ass sword, he may be in trouble when going into (big) cities.
And if there is a fighting tournanment only characters with a warrior diploma may be able to enter certain disciplines.

Being a Warrior comes with a similar status as being a Knight, as Warriors too follow a code of honor. At least people see you as someone better than just a figher, soldier or even a officer in an army. In regions like the Middenrealm a academy, which is often run privately, nevertheless needs to get a permission by the church of Rondra. Also being a Warrior opens you the chance to get into higher ranks in Military.

Ok, but what really differenties an Academy graduated Warrior from say, a Mercenary? Let us look what the developers have implied in the two statblocks below for each profession which I copy pasted from the rules (hope that's ok Ulisses, if not let me know I will edit them out. )

► Show Spoiler

From these, I infer Warriors are more disciplined and better trained, while Mercenaries are more Roguish, yet almost as good with a 2H weapon. Mercenaries are also trained in Crossbows, which Warriors are not, maybe because they are considered dishonorable weapons? Warriors also have more Ettiquete and Self Control, so they would be able to mingle with the nobility and gentry better, while Mercenaries would mingle better with the lower classes and rogues in seedy taverns (due to skills like Carousing and Fast Talk)

German players (or anyone else who knows), will there ever be a source-book down the line detailing Warrior Academies and Special Abilities &/or Advantages only Academy Trained Warriors may receive? I think that would be really cool and help diversify Diploma Warriors more from other fighting classes. Mercenaries OTOH can have Special Abilities lending themselves to dirty/dishonorable fighting, perhaps having skills like Carousing & Fast Talk as prerequisites.

Also, do solely places like Middenrealm have Warrior Academies? What about places like Tulmide, Mhanadistan or the deserts and cities of the Novadi? I know I can stat a Fighter from there similarly but are there any specific academies or fighting companies that train Fighters similar to Academy Trained Warriors from Middenrealm?

I know it might sound strange I focus so much on this, but ever since I read the old Basic Rules translated by Fanpro I was always fascinated by the idea of an Academy Trained Warrior; kind of like midway between a Knight and a run of the mill Fighter, yet without the roleplaying baggage of the former. :D

No it is not that strange to focus on this because the TDE rule have done so since the 3rd edition :)

The Compendium which will soon be release in German is going to include more information about Warriors and the Academies. In the last editon there were several Professions for different Academies, most of them in the Middenrealm but also in other areas of Aventuria, e. g. the Dwarven School of Dragon Fighting in Xorlosh.

The Compendium will also include more Special Abilities for Combat. They will also introduce Fighting Styles. Fighting Styles are new in the 5th Edition an will give access to Special Abilities that are not available otherwise, to differntiate fighters more.

I heard there are little "skill trees" for each fighting style in the compendium.

Luke already said if you graduated a warrior academy you will habe the right to bear arms in cities which only citizens of said City are allowed to do plus you are allowed to bear two handed weapons which not even citizens are allowed. Also you may wear full plante armour and take part in the prestigious parts of tournaments. Every academy focusses on a specific style oft combat and with the Kompendium Expansion that style will be a "skill tree" oft Manouvers plus every academy gives you a unique ability. There are academies In the midden realm, deep south, thorwal, and the tulamidian lands as well AS one in the dwarven City xorlosch (but there will be 2 dwarven styles. Xorlosch(dragon fighters) and cendrasch(generic dwarven warrior)

You get it by graduating a warriors academy.so you have to take the profession warrior (you can of course alter the skills a bit.if you like. If you are not noble , debt would be a good disadvantage. The tuition is about 1500gold) its mainly a background thing use your common sense if a Charakter looks and feels like a rogue hes not a warrior.if he combines social skills with knowledge and martial specialisation he can be a warrior. The martial compendium will make it way easier introducing some academies and the special abilities that are connected to said academy. " you got academy-xy fighting style at chargen. so you are a warrior. You arent a warrior at chargen, so you cannot geht the SA linked to it because it takes years at the academy to learn."
