Registration Changed to Admin Approval

Postby Eric USNA » Tue Sep 13, 2016 9:12 am

Hello everyone,

In order to curb the spam, I have set the board registration policy to requiring admin approval. This will make it somewhat more difficult to register, as new users will need to wait for me to let them in. Hopefully this will not deter too many people from joining our community, but our growing spam issues have made this necessary.

Thank you,

-Eric

I think that is entirely the right decision. I hope that it will have the intended impact.

Also loving that emails now come from you :)

There are different ways to increase the "difficulty" of registration, without you having to approve every user.
Things a bot can't do.
I remember a forum I was once admin of, we had a little picture in the registration process and you had to write down what this picture was (spoiler: a carrot). This worked rather well and if you had different pictures, you could increase the difficulty even more. On another forum I've seen either written calculations you had to answer with a number ("What is twenty-one minus twelve?" "9") or small, not to hard questions if you have a little bit of knowledge of TDE ("Who's producing TDE?" "Ulisses").
Maybe this helps?

@Hex
That helps against bots, but not against human spammers. Many spammers are humans which go through registration process and once they are registered, leave posting to bot.
At least that's what I've read on the web regarding this subject.
I'd have to be a warrior, a slave I couldn't be.
A soldier and a conqueror, fighting to be free.

Hm, but in this case an email verification won't help much, too, I guess.
Except it'll discourage spammers because of the wait.

HEX - we have had the robot captcha and email verification in place the entire time. These are human spammers.

I wouldn't mind a simple math question or Captcha or what not every time I post.
If that is what is needed to rid ourselves of most of the spam, then sure, it is a hassle worth bothering with.

I'm not sure if I have the capability of doing a per-post captcha. But I can look into it.

Let's see whether the steps just taken prove effective first :)
