A Thousand Dramatic Skill Resolutions (and a DSR)

Postby greybird » Thu Nov 28, 2019 10:16 pm

I thought it might be a handy resource if we could brainstorm a bunch of ideas for uses for DSR in games. It could be any realm. To get it started:

1. Disarming a bomb before it explodes (the classic)
2. Bypassing the security to get into a vault before the guard returns
3. Stealing evidence from a police lockup before they notice the camera is looping
4. Escaping a burning building before it collapses
5. Repairing a door mechanism before the room fills with water
6. *Winning a cooking competition in Tharkold where teams of cooks face off against each other, and you have to finish the dish before time expires.
7. Finding you got there too late and having to not only stop the summoning ritual, but reverse the current progress before *bad thing* arrives.
8. Turning off the self destruct before you get your self... destructed.
9. Safely removing somebody's cybertech/occultech implant that has gotten hacked/possessed before it takes total control of its owner.
10. Decouple the engine from a runaway train before it reaches a curve and careens off the track, taking its passengers (and cargo) off a cliff.
11. *Complete a summoning or banishing ritual before the time limit runs out and the wrong thing is summoned (or the summon isn't controlled.)
12. *Escape quicksand before sinking
13. *Complete a steep climb before (event happens)
14. *Ford a raging river (before pursuers arrive, perhaps?)
15. *Trying to crash land a plane safely before a fatal crash occurs.
16. *Trying to get through an underwater passage before drowning
17. *Escaping from under ice in a frozen lake before drowning
18. *Escaping a burning building (before it collapses or you're overcome by smoke)
19. *Constructing a special weapon to destroy an enemy before they arrive
20. *Isolating a signal from background noise (before it is too late and it fades completely.)
21. *Demolishing an important enemy facility, like a gospog field (before too many defenders arrive/before it activates)
22. *Constructing a special device to save someone/something (before it is too late)
23. *Getting a vehicle running for a getaway (before pursuers catch up or find you)
24. *Finding and retrieving the most important data from a collapsing library (before it collapses - would also work for a databank)
25. *Arguing a case in court (before the judge runs out of patience)
26. *Convincing local authorities to let you go/allow you to proceed/actively help you (before it is too late.)

*Indicates that it isn't my own. I'm not pick and choosing, but I am paraphrasing to fit them into a single sentence. Sections in parentheses I added to include the time limit/building threat that make a DSR so D.)

Winning a cooking competition in Tharkold where teams of cooks face off against each other, and you have to finish the dish before time expires.

It’s like “Chopped” or “Cutthroat Kitchen”, except losers actually experience chopping and throats being cut.

(What can I say, I was watching Food Network today.)

Keep 'em comin', and I'll keep updating the list. A good list could be great inspiration for all sorts of sessions for the Torg GMs out there (myself included.)

Orrosh... any kind of summoning or banishing ritual.
Step A) correctly draw diagram on floor (conjugation skill)
Step B) correctly speak start of ritual (languages skill)
Step C) interpretive dance (maneuver skill)
Step D) pull forth/banish host (conjugation skill)

Complete in 5 rounds or the wrong host will appear devouring everyone in its path (or not).

Bonuses for special ingredients (sacrifice) to the final conjugation total (possibly gaining darkness perks etc.). Step D also inflicts damage total equal to the rituals difficulty and the user must stay conscious and alive (or not) to make it work.
Question everything.
Politeness costs nothing.

No idea how the cyberpapacy supplement will deal with such things, but I've used DSR to override security systems on a CP installation - using a mix of Computer and Faith checks.

Let's see...

Escaping quicksand (LL or NE)
Quietly sneaking past a guardian to take a Thing from it's lair.
Rock climbing a sheer cliff.
Fording a raging river.
Trying to crash land a plane.
Swimming through a murky underwater passage while holding your breath.
The same, only under a frozen lake.
Escaping a burning building.

Dancing with the Duchess to steal her necklace (which contains a key!) at a Grand Ball.

Intense philosophical debate with a computer or sentient artifact which will unleash massive destruction unless you prove that Humanity is worth keeping.

Constructing the special weapon to destroy incoming monster.
Locating a fading/elusive signal under disturbance.
Demolishing an important enemy facility, like a gospog field.
Surgically removing a deadly parasite before it's too late.
Constructing/Deconstructing an execution device to kill/save the target.
Starting the engine of the vehicle for getaway.
Finding and retrieving the most important data from a collapsing library.

Arguing a case in court (all the interaction skills!)
Convincing local authorities to let you go/allow you to proceed/activly help you (may include bribes, red-tape bureaucracy, bullying, etc.)

Updated! I paraphrased a few that were multiple lines just to get them to fit the format, or if they were redundant with other suggestions already in place. I already have a stack of ideas for ways to implement some of these in my own games.

In oTorg, I ran what I called a Duel Arcane as repeated DSRs. It was a cycle of:
  1. Diviniation to find a pool of magical energy
  2. Conjuration to open a path to the natural world
  3. Apportation to conduct the energy into the world
  4. Alteration to stabilize the energy into a tangible form

You could count any total as a success but the amount you got was the measure of the lowest value each cycle that you took as a success. Highest total energy after the time ran out won.
