I agree,
I have it set up to email me when new posts arrive and it's always the question, real post or spam.

I don't seem to have this as much on other forums, but then most of those aren't really open to the wide public.

It's a tradeoff. If we feel it's a terrible nuisance, I can lock down registration more, but that's less inviting to new people.

I may take a poll about it in the near future.

I do understand that,
I am not sure how other people feel but I believe we should go at least one step towards reducing the spam. I have the feeling that it's getting worse and not a day without spam goes by.

I don't know what steps can be taken and how much trouble that puts on potential new forum members but spam seems to be rampant at the moment.
