Half Elven Spellweavers and Wyldrunners

Postby AnonymousWizard » Fri Jun 22, 2018 4:10 pm

I don't know if I'm missing something from an earlier edition that explains it all, but I find it weird that the Core Rules restrict the Spellweaver and Wyldrunner professions to just elves while allowing half-elves to have elven cultures.

First off, I know that as a GM I can allow half elves to take the professions, and probably will (as long as they take Spellcaster and Two-Voiced Singing), it's just one of those things that I suspect has a legacy reason behind not allowing the mixed-race characters into the special elf professions, one of those things that was left out of the corebook because those who have played the game for decades know all about it and can reference Book Y where it's fully explained.

Page 92 "Sometimes half elves are adopted by the family of
their elven parent, but often they suffer contempt or
anger, for they are deemed badoc—a state of mind best
described as becoming too human."

They just dont share their secrets with short lived, human minded halfbreeds. Even if they do like them for some reason, they wont live long enough to master their profession, when they got the basics, they usually die. so its a waste of time. Elves arent nice, but pragmatic.

I guess I read that statement differently to how it was intended (my interpretation was more along the lines of 'they are hated and looked down upon, but would still be taught the basics of elfing'). But yes, it does make sense that half-elven children wouldn't be taught 'properly' and as such wouldn't pick up the elven professions. Thanks for pointing that bit out, I'm feeling a bit silly.

So I'm guessing that a half-elf raised by elves built using a Profession would have a Mundane Profession (say Hunter to be stereotypical, although I can easily see Merchant), plus maybe Tradition (elf) and a couple of spells at low skill values that they managed to pick up by watching others. Although from what I can tell about TDE magic unless you're an elf (and a full blooded one at that) you don't learn it naturally at all and have to be taught, so just a mundane profession is probably even more 'canon'.

They will have some spells that support their mundane profession yes. Especially if you have one of the rare urban elve clans/tribes that deal with half-elves more often. They would even find useful spells for more human professions to support their offspring. Since magic isnt something on its own for elves, but more like another limb to use in their work, that would be the natural way for them

Since half elves can purchase spellcaster and two voiced singing I have no problem with them learning a elven profession. However, they will have a hard time finding elves who feel that they at kindred and thus learning new spells or songs, or anything related to their profession will be much harder. If you just want they abilities play a elf. If you want to play a half elf with elf abilities then you need to accept that there are consequences that may hinder your growth.

I dont think they can be Spellweavers and Wyldrunners as those are the Elite spellcaster specialists with in the elf cultures. That said... they can take Tradition Elf as long as they have the points and meet the prerequisites. So build a normal half elf but take the two voiced singing and tradition elf and spell caster. He would be a terrible spell caster but is legal. The proffessions are a aid to char gen not a jacket to restrict character creation.

This is really not rocket science.

Look at the cultures a half-elf can be. Look at the 3 elf cultures and see what their common professions are. As long as you take two voice singing and spellcaster for your half elf you can be a spell weaver or wyldrunner or any of the other professions in Aventuria Magic 2.
