Designer Diary: The Nile Empire Part 1

Postby TorgHacker » Thu Oct 04, 2018 1:37 pm

Now that we've done most of the previews, I can get into the weeds a bit on how we came up with things...

Really nice write-up. I like seeing the behind-the-scenes of development.

I think I like the Designer Diary posts almost as much as the previews.

Can't wait...already arranged for the Nile box to be my wife's belated Birthday gift to me :)

Awesome! Thank you so much for sharing all that.

Although it kind of sounds like you're running out of teasers for us. Are you sure we can't get the Kickstarter going?

Soon. SOOOOOOOOON.

I've got at least two 'planned'. Hopefully by the time those are out, and the second Designer Diary is out, we'll be spinning up the Kickstarter previews.

But if not, I've still got others...just might be smaller ones.

I'm surprised you thought there would be massive pushback on limiting Super Heroes to Super Heroes? It's a Pulp Genre not a Supers world. And Supers dont scale well in other cosms.

I love the Pulp genre and the Super genre. But I'm glad my chocolate and peanut butter are separate. YMMV

I assume the pushback would have been from oTorg fans who wanted NE to be closer to four-color comic book superheroes as it used to be. Such as a person who wanted to recreate their old character on the new system. If people are disappointed by the change they haven’t been especially vocal about it.

You'd be surprised by how many people aren't familiar with pulp heroes and just hear "Hero" and assume, you know, tall buildings in a single bound.

Which is weird because Batman is, you know, right *there*, but hey.

True, but I have to say, one of the most consistent complaints* I remember seeing in oTorg was that the supers were too super and not pulped enough.

...um, pulpy, I mean. Obviously. No one is pulping heroes around here, ha ha.

So I get being worried about it, because people do complain more than they praise, so presumably everyone who was happy with the way they were done in oTorg just didn't say anything but as soon as they touched it, would have picked up their pitchforks to dive in. But I'm not really surprised that this one went over smoothly.

*-- Not necessarily the biggest or most vocal, but consistent.
