The Pope! How many divisions has he got?

Postby Count Thalim » Mon Oct 01, 2018 4:14 pm

As supposedly said by Joseph Stalin back in the 30's in reference to the perceived powerlessness of the occupant of the Holy See.

In TORG however we may be getting an answer to this at some point.

At present the Swiss Guard is just over 100 men serving terms between 2-4 years on average.
If we assume that any former members who are below the age of 40 would be willing to answer a call to arms the Pope could probably muster a force of around 1,000 current and former Guards.
As a side note all of these are Swiss citizens who have passed basic military training and received further training in close protection.
Their equipment is also modelled on that used by the Swiss army (SIG P220 pistol, SIG SG50 Assault Rifle, H&K MP7) but also has the traditional Halberds, Swords & Rapiers. Though how much training they have in these is debatable. Probably more in the Torgverse.

The Core book just says that the Pope is hiring mercenaries and bolstering its defences against Malraux.
Assuming that the Swiss Guard are brought up to strength as the core what sort of force do people think the Pope could raise?

Personally I'm not expecting the Pope to be commanding tank divisions or have fighter squadrons on standby. (possibly an escort for the Papal jet  )
I'm seeing the bulk of the force as mainly infantry, probably being found in defensive points rather than taking the fight to the Cyberpapcy.

In my last mission I sent the team on I used a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith as my floating DPC. A bit of a fanatic that one, but when Demons and the Anti-pope are real you tend to fall back on your factions traditional methods.
They were tied in to the resistance movement which I see as being the main way the Pope is striking back at the moment.

What do other people think?

There are 1.3 billion Catholics, so I'm betting in a time of spiritual war he could easily raise a powerful army if he chose.

IMC though, I'm just going to treat them like oTorg, and have them create more of a secret agency of spiritual espionage types focused mostly on Malreaux but also on other high spirit invading cosms. Yeah, he will have a heck of a personal army too, with lots of money, but I see that as mostly defensive and they probably won't be encountered unless the party goes to the Vatican for some reason.

The Vatican Secret Service may still be a thing.

Maybe.

Possibly.

Actual divisions? Not sure. Not too many, honestly.
But when the demons come, I'm willing to bet that there are quite a few Cardinals and bishops who have strong enough faith to banish any that show up. And there are probably a few that end up Possibility rated, as well. Physically, the Italian Army, backed by the Swiss Guard, should be a decent deterant.

Well, you know, he has the Italian military between himself and any invasion, so, that's a bonus. I'd lay odds that there are quite a few agents that are active, however. The (Pope) works in mysterious ways. :D

I have to admit that I like the oTorg "living hardpoint" idea.

Wouldn't be the first time that a Pope had to survive an invasion from France. If they change popes during the Possibility Wars, maybe they can get a warrior pope like Julius II. Even better if he was a Storm Knight.

Yeah, but TE specifically excludes people .... although ... a person becoming a hardpoint after death is an interesting path.

Not just Secret Service. I think I recall hearing somewhere that the Vatican has thermonuclear weapons. Not missiles or silos or anything like that, obviously, but I heard that they had one or more of the somewhat portable, low-yield variety of warhead. Has anyone looked into this, or am I just imagining it?

If so, well, nukes work just fine under Cyberpapal axioms. And there'd be no missile for CP anti-ballistic defenses to shoot down, so that might be a deterrent to Malraux right there.

In the real world, the only thing I could find was http://realnewsrightnow.com/2015/08/vat ... lear-test/ , and despite the site's name it's about as real as the German Democratic Republic was, well, democratic.

In pulpy TORG, sure. Why not?
