PC Transformation Ideas

Postby Spatula » Thu Aug 01, 2019 3:15 pm

One of my players, a Pan-Pacifica ninja, disconnected in the Cyberpapacy and then rolled a 1 on his reconnection test. And he only had 1 add in the reality skill. So... now he’s a Cyberpapacy ninja?

How would you reimagine a stealth-and-melee focused ninja as part of the Cyberpapacy?

That seems like an easier transition than most. He's effectively a special forces soldier concentrating in melee.

Keep him stealth specialized, then add some appropriate cyberware - Low-Light MK II (ignore 2 points of darkness penalties), Encrypted Comms (silent communication), and a Integrated Body Mount (conceal weapons) all seem very appropriate. On the weapons side, he could conceivably keep his electric katana, as it still works, or go for the more concealable Power Dagger. Cyberpapacy is not as big on melee, though, so he might add a small GodLight Laser, which is also concealable, to stick with the old theme.

You could also go down the Resistance/SOE route if you wanted to emphasis the stealth and sneakiness approach.

If Cyberpapacy cyberpunk is "the future as perceived by 1980's futurists", then there would be a strong through-line of Japanese zaibatsus as an expression of fears of Asian global market dominance. This is, of course, the same strain of thinking that gave us Nippon Tech back in the day, but you can find plenty of examples of 80's/90's cyber-ninja and Yakuza assassins wielding mono-filament weapons and what not. They are played as straight faced as possible and seen as genuinely bad-ass for most of the era, back in the days when we thought trench coats and katanas weren't embarrassing cliches. Translating the Pan-Pacifica Perk abilities and tech seems relatively simple if you go that way.

If instead the Cyberpapacy is leaping forward from a more contemporary viewpoint of corporate shadow assassins, then the cybernetics get crazier and more trans-human. Your ninja is likely to be more ironically self-aware than stone-faced and stoic, and their skills and background will likely be eclectic. Unfettered access to the GodNet means they are likely to have or acquire some hack/deck skills to help make them as stealthy in AR and VR as they are in meatspace.

The religious and spiritual elements of any version of the Cyberpapacy would have some complex relationships to Asia and Japan in particular. Jesuit missionaries were active in Japan in the 16th century until the Shogunate began purging them and banned Catholicism. The restrictions weren't lifted until the 19th century. Is ninja "magic" like the Ki Powers of Pan-Pacifica heresy, though? Its not technically the result of external (i.e. demonic) influence but rather a cultivation of internal energy - not really Magic, not really Miracles - but its not completely removed from religious or spiritual elements.

Also, the Law of Suspicion feels like a real lateral move from the Law of Intrigue.

If your Cyber-Ninja didn't have Ki powers to begin with, this point may be moot, but its fun to think about!

As a Pan-Pacifica Ninja he was a cash motivated stealth warrior. Converting to the Cyberpapacy, he would be a mercenary stealth fighter. Ki Perks become Cyberware. Seems easy enough. Unless he had some strange perks?

Sounds like the Cyber Initiative of the Lin Kuei in Mortal Kombat.

Some of this depends on just how transformed someone is.

For instance, how transformed is the body? Do they gain cyber? Do they lose their phenotype?

What about their mind? Do they retain their ninja skills and mindset (that of a stealthy special-forces operative, more or less) What do they gain?

Does their faith, if any, change? Does it increase? Do they become a follower of the Malreaux Bible?

It's a good time to sit down and have a chat with the player, see where they want to go with it.

Japan has a long history of Christian missionaries and some themes have been adapted to modern Japanese media but it often takes a … tilt. Akin to someone from Japan watching a US cartoon where they kinda *vaguely* get Shintoism but not *really* and there's some wincing and everybody kinda shuffles around awkwardly.

For instance, watch some Baby Metal on YouTube, especially their concert footage. They put a lot of Christianity-through-Japanese-filter material on stage that can be as uncomfortable as enthralling.

Of you can weave past that and go, "Cyborg ninja? Yeah, that sounds cool. Let's roll with it!"

You got options. :D

Another couple of ideas:
- if the character was about fighting the power of the corporations from within, he might become a rogue inquisitor. The historic inquisition was about investigating misdeeds by people of the cloth, not hunting witches or satanists.
- he might learn some spellcraft, Disguise Self, Scrambler and EMP sound like something a stealthy infiltrator would use a lot

In the end the question to ask the player is what was the core idea of the character. Was it the stealth? The money? The fighting? All of them?
