The Litany of the Regents

Postby OccumsRazor » Sat Jan 26, 2019 12:11 pm

The following document I present to the readers as a short history of the office of Regent of the Known Worlds.

The Phoenix Throne established by Vladimir Alecto, formalized in his Great Charter of 4550, endured for four hundred and forty three years under the rule of fifty five Regents from every faction of the Known Worlds. This is their history. Those who ruled. Those who shaped and formed history a decade at a time.

Note: While I tried to follow cannon as much as possible in this document most of what is included in the following posts is home-brewed conjecture and fiction.

While not a Regent I cannot begin the story without a brief introduction to the man who made it all possible......

*Emperor Vladimir Alecto: Vladimir’s attempts at consolidation of the Known Worlds started after the Vuldrok pillaged Byzantium Secundus in 4537 and where at their height between 4540 – 4548. Vladimir joined Windsor and Tethys forces to defeat Ragnor Thorsonn, at the Battle of Two Horse Fields in 4547. He declared himself Emperor of the Known Worlds shortly thereafter. He only managed to pull together the warring factions of his fledgling Empire in time to defeat Froljir the Ill Fated during the battle of Firefrost on Gwynneth in 4548. During the next two years he consolidated his rule till his coronation and death in 4550. He consolidated Alecto holdings around his new crown and added greatly at it with recently liberated facilities on Byzantium and Tethys to support the Imperial Navy, Imperial Eye and Imperial Army. [Including the Airyavo Vego factories on Tethys into the Regency Air Intelligence Defense (RAID)].

The coronation celebrations lasted for weeks. The Great Charter was signed by the Houses, Patriarch, and Leaguemeister. The voting scepters distributed during subsequent ceremonies. A week later the electors held a unanimous vote to “confirm” his election and coronation. Weeks of ceremony and celebration cumulated in the coronation ceremony itself; which as every school child knows ended in fire and flames. Instantaneously the sky’s and street’s around Byzantium erupted into chaos. The Hazat were particularly effective in eliminating their enemies in the early hours after the assassination. The Cameton and Gesar were slower to react but were still able to secure significant Alecto holdings before calls for the election of a Regent were issued. (Lived 4442 – 4550)

Upon Vladimirs death chaos reigned for months. At first the opportunity the Great Charter laid out in law was unrecognized. Until in desperation the Alecto's themselves attempted to reign in the bloodshed and save their great house from annihilation.

Prince Regent Basil Alecto: Declared himself Regent of the Known Worlds in 4550 upon the death of his cousin Vladimir Alecto. He created much of the Regency’s structure and established the election process for the Regency, based on the Great Charter, in the midst of great anger against his house. His attempt to institutionalize Vladimir’s Great Charter was instrumental in creating the Regency as we see it today. Ironically he held the first election in 4551 in a flawed attempt to stem the violence that eventually would lead to his houses destruction. He was killed defending his lands on Tethys in 4555.

Basil’s reign and full year of administration is something of a miracle. Surrounded on all sides by violent enemies; he somehow managed to stave them off in an effort to a give his family time to reorganize. His leadership is probably the only reason that the Alecto survived the first decade after Vladaamir’s death.

Regent Kim Tam Gesar: Regent of the Known Worlds from 4551-4561. The Gesar’s managed to elect one of their own in the wake of the ongoing universal purge of House Alecto, the recent wake of worlds cutting themselves off from the jumpweb (Dashwood, Colossus, and soon followed by Paradise), and ongoing wars between houses. This was largely due to Kim Tam’s policy line to separate and isolate the “Imperial Assets” of Vladimir from those of other members of House Alecto. Kim Tam implemented those policies with even more zeal then most noble houses anticipated.

In the wake of his election he confiscated 90% of the Byzantium property of the house for “The Regency.” He segregated all Alecto and Justinian holdings on Tethys captured since the rise of Vladimir into the Regency’s hands. He scavenged forces assigned to Nowhere, Sutek, and Midian from the Alecto to bolster the growing Imperial Military. The acquisition and consolidation of these assets under the Regency’s banner is generally viewed as self serving by today’s Regency historians . Ultimately that may come from prejudice against the Gesar.

The Regents appointed a number of high officials who assisted in creating stability during the first decade of the Regency. The first Lord Admiral of the Imperial Navy, Sayhitama Singh Shaprutaii al Malik, personally led a small force to a number of important victories during this period. His victory over the Justinian and Torenson forces on Ananda are widely regarded as the reason that the two houses handed over control of the world. Governor Charles-Vincent Windsor established law and order on the war torn world of Tethys. General Lin Yuka Gesar forcefully removed the last Alecto forces from Jericho seizing the critical moon for the Regency.

Kim Tam actively fought against the candidacy of his successor Sinclair Cameton. Their animosity played out in the Regency Court for decades. In the wake of his Regency he fought a personal war between his New Istanbul and a neighboring Alecto Barony. His last days were spent in conflict and strife with many of those whom he had previously led during his years in office.

Regent Gordon Sinclair Cameton: Marquess Gordon Sinclair was born to a house fighting against the rising supremacy of House Alecto to the detriment of his own family. Between the Alecto and Gesar offensives during the 1st Emperor War; House Cameton was reduced to their fiefs on eastern Aldaia by the time Gordon took control of the House from his mother. He was highly successful in the aftermath of Vladimir’s fall securing all of Aldaia from the Alecto and Gesar within five years of his ascension. This success translated into popularity with the Hawkwood, al Malik, Hazat, Van Gelder, and Justinian who wanted little more than to keep the Regency focused on Byzantium while they stripped the houses of lands on other worlds.

Regent of the Known Worlds from 4561-4566; Lord Sinclair was elected in efforts to thwart the Gesar expansion. He spent most of his tenure concentrating on grabbing lands from the failing Gesar family’s and other minor houses “in the name of the Regency”. He concentrated his forces on Byzantium during his term; leaving much of the rest of the Regency’s assets to fend for themselves. This in turn meant significant losses of lands and Imperial assets on outlying worlds.

Gordon Sinclair was assassinated in 4566 by radical allies of Baron Wyston-Smythe Eduardo. HIs incomplete term meant that many of his efforts, in hindsight, backfired on him. Instead of providing precedence for Cameton claims his actions resulted in consolidated the Regency’s claims. This came about, due to a massive Reeve legal suit brought (at the supposed expense of Patriarch Nadrim) by the Church against the Gesar. (One of many cases that support historians claims that the Patriarch strongly supported the creation of a more independent Regency).

Regent Duke Miguel Ruis de Bursandras: The Bursandras family utilized the multiple wars being fought by the other Hazat houses to have Miguel elected Regent of the Known Worlds. Votes from the Justinian, Van Gelder, al Malik, Windsor, and Gesar brought him to power in exchange for promises of focusing Hazat war efforts on Vera Cruz. He held the post from 4566-4576; he was successful in keeping his promises to his allies until 4573 when the last Kurgan forces were expelled. While he rebuilt and reorganized the Regency forces to support his brethren against the Kurgan many known world concerns were left to be managed by a string of corrupt officials within the upper echelons of his bureaucracy.

Upon success of the Imperial and Hazat forces over the Kurgans; Imperial forces were withdrawn to ensure that Hazat gains were secured by the house and not the Empire. The entire Imperial/Regency military had no additional direction from the Regent and were kept at full staff for almost a year in orbit of Aragon and Byzantium. A series of mutinies resulted within the Imperial fleet that were widely reported across the Known Worlds by the Town Criers. Rumor of rebellion within the Regency armed forces was widespread. Victory celebrations, scheduled by the Regent, were held on Byzantium Secundus were initially well attended but his support quickly diminished. The other Hazat families returned from the Kurgan front only to renewed attacks against Duke Miguel’s former allies.

During his early tenure the Hazat sold a number of untenable assets they had seized on Criticorum, Midian, and Draxus to the Regency. The Firebird Tower in Acheon was one such acquisition of particular note which has survived. More importantly at the time the City of Lowell on Draxus (as well as much of the rest of the Isle Juliette) was purchased and became a key Regency power base.

The last two years of his reign four assassination attempts against him by former allies caused him to close himself off from government. After he stepped down he was faced with endless public shaming by critics and regular duels until he committed suicide in 4582.

Regent Genevieve Mayal Van Gelder: Lady Genevieve Van Gelder was born into the Court politics of Cadiz prior to Vladamir’s rise and spent the decades of his rise and fall in service to her houses diplomatic core. She was part of the team that settled land disputes and restitution with the Decados in the wake of Abdera’s bombing as well as settling numerous ownership disputes with the Regency of Gordon Sinclair. She was a career diplomat with little power within her own house but wide ranging respect.

Princess Anna Van Gelder raised her candidacy in hopes of driving more diplomatic solutions to the conflicts that plagued the Regency of this period. She was elected Regent of the Known Worlds in 4576 by a slim margin. Genevieve (via Anna) had been forced to promise many offices of her administration to outside forces to secure her election.

Amongst these advisors was Archbishop Tara Markoli whose tax collectors enforced the Faithful Tax quite harshly on Byzantium and other Regency lands; the eventual riots, looting, siege, and Zuranist Invasion of 4580 are still remembered today.

While the Zuranist threat may be what she is most remembered for her reign also saw the final days of Alecto rule. Lord Juan Manuel Alecto married into the Hazat family in 4577, Count Matin Tremissis Alecto was assassinated on Manitou less than 10 days later, and the Duchess Anna Romanos Alecto released her remaining holdings on Sutek to Hazat in early 4579 before retiring to a convent.

She is often remembered as The Weak Regent on Byzantium Secundus due to the Zuranist Evacuation of 4580. It is widely believed that the resources expended by the Van Gelder to support Genevieve’s reign were responsible for the Houses further decent into minor house status. In retrospect Genevieve’s reigns greatest failures lay in the level of control held over her by her key military commanders and governors. Her reign was stained by refusals of support from what should have been her greatest supporters.

She ruled until 4586. At which time she went into the service of her liege Princess Anna. She spent the rest of her years in Anna’s court and retired into obscurity on Cadiz in 4602.

Regent Grace du’Lac Hawkwood - Windsor: Regent of the Known Worlds from 4586-4590. Lady Grace Hawkwood (b. 4539) was raised in her father’s courts (the Duke of Fordan; Gwynneth) with the best teachers and tutors available. A quick-witted woman of many talents she was immediately identified as a marriage target for high ranking noblemen. She spent her youth surrounded by suitors. She was married to the Viscount Iain Lydan Windsor in 4573 in a marriage designed to closely unite Hawkwood and Windsor interests.

The Regent Grace presided over a period of structural and hierarchical development of the Regency. Tired of war and the House Alecto extinct, most of the nobility were convinced that a strong Regency was in every party’s interest. She reformed the Imperial Eye breaking the facilities it shared with the Regency Navy and Army’s. The “Imperial Fleet” was considerably strengthened with the bequest of recently acquired Alecto property’s on Galtea.

Tragically before her reforms could be completed, Regent Grace died in office of a suspected poisoning in 4590. Her husband acted as Regent pro-tem until General Vance Tayler was elected 3 months later. Viscount Iain Windsor spent many years pushing for further investigation of his wife’s death. His initial accusations against the Decados and Van Gelder seem to have later turned to suspicion against certain members of Patriarch Nadrims inner circle or the new Criticorumiyy al-Malik Duke.

Regent ‘General’ Vance Taylor: The famous commander of the church’s armies in the years after Vladimir’s death, General Vance Taylor was elected Regent of the Known Worlds from 4590-4600. Vance was born to a military family in service to the church on Mars but his schooling was on Holy Terra itself. He served the churches army against the Kurgan and Vuldrok in his youth. During Vladimir’s campaigns he gained note for leading the peoples exodus from the Siege of Sardonia. He later took charge of the relief of Abdera after House Van Gelder’s bombing campaign.

A favorite of Patriarch Nadrim he was greatly respected by the Hazat and Hawkwood of the day for his military acumen and his balanced treatment of the various noble houses. As Regent the General built on his predecessors work restructuring the military industrial capabilities of the Regency’s armies and navy. His most lasting achievement has been The Tayler Officer Schools on Tethys and Byzantium that continue to bear his name.

For a military general as Regent his military actions during his tenure were few, mostly limited to protecting Regency assets from the al-Malik Civil war between Prince Tahir and Duke Ja’Far and the ongoing Decados – Gesar proxy wars on Tamerlain. After his patron’s death in 4598 his influence was instrumental in ensuring the security of Holy Terra during the subsequent Conclave.

During the Regency Election of 4600 he supported Consul Isabella Minimotoa much to the annoyance of his fellow churchmen. Isabella kept Vance Tayler close by her side as a military advisor during her short reign. He briefly took the reins of the Regency for the period after her assassination until a new election could be held. He died on Holy Terra in 4620.

Regent “Beau” Isabella Minamoto: Consul Beau Minimoto acted as Senshal for Regent Tayler from 4592 till 4600. She was elected Regent of the Known Worlds in her own right in 4600. The Minimoto family had recognized Isabella’s incredible potential during her youth. Her intelligence and charisma led them to install her into the Byzantium Courts in 4574 at the age of 19.

Her short reign was highlighted by the consolidation of the Imperial Mint, an institution that had been badly mishandled by previous Regents. She also was instrumental in the consolidation of Guild influence in the courts and in the Byzantium bureaucracy. Her appointment of numerous church officials to positions of power within the Regency proved to be a boon for Church-Guild relations.

She was killed in a bombing in 4601. Her death was long believed to have been Imperial Eye agents acting on behalf of powerful members of House Gesar. Church and Guild forces tracked down and captured the Gesar nobles believed responsible and executed them after very public show trails. Regent Vance Tayler was briefly reinstated as regent pro-tem in the wake of her death to investigate and maintain order while the next election was underway.

Regent Nizar Zahle Criticorumiyy al Malik: The 1st al Malik Regent, Nizar was an academic prodigy born on Criticorum, the third child, of the Count of Yintrai. He was extensively tutored and travelled Criticorum society within his mother’s entourage. His early life is rife with stories regarding meeting the most famous (and infamous) personages of the day. Nizar had a particular interest in law and history from the age of ten. A young man during Vladimir’s Wars he provided educated counsel to the Criticorumiyy leadership, many three to four times his own age.

The unexpected death of Regent Beau Minamoto left a divided electorate with few immediate candidates supported by more than 1 faction. Duke Ja’far ben Sihnijah Criticorumiyy al-Malik proposed the well known Count Nizar as Regent to very few objections. Nizar gained quick support of the Guilds. Many of the Royal Houses came to support him as well (Seeing that the al-Malik, at that time, were concentrating their military and territorial efforts against non-Royal families).

As Regent of the Known Worlds from 4601-4610; he was fastidious in improving the Regency Courts and enforcing the law in Regency lands. He built the Regents Guard from a powerless entity into a capable criminal deterrent across Regency held lands. The Regency court he maintained during his tenure was filled with intelligentsia, nobles, and celebrity. He retained the majority of his predecessors appointments with the exception of the rebellious Governor Dane Richto (a Decados sponsored Engineer) on Aphasi whom he replaced with the famous warrior poet Tao Zeng Li Halon.

Towards the end of his tenure as Regent a large scale mobilization of Regency forces occurred around Hazat space when the Eduardos took control of the house. The mobilization was a disaster with various fleets receiving countermanding orders; much of which was publicized by the Town Criers.

Regent Nazar was quite popular on Byzantium by the end of his reign; however his influence on his native Criticorum and other al Malik holdings was almost non-existent. He died less than a year after the election of his predecessor of a rare form of sweating sickness, conspiracy theorists believe it was the early strain of the Green Death.

Regent Adolpho Van Gelder II: Regent of the Known Worlds from 4611-4621; Adolpho will always be remembered for boldersting the Regency Courts and the creation of the Five Fabled Cities of Refuge. Born the second son of Prince Adolpho I, he was groomed to assist his family in regaining its past position in the Known Worlds. Adolpho was quite successful in retaining the much of the houses influence and remaining assets. He reinforced the Van Gelder - Decados border treaties on Cadiz and politically neutralized threats from Gesar remnants and Trusknikron adventurers. Intrigue in al-Malik space and the Green Plague distracted most of the attention from Adolpho’s later rulings.

Adolpho’s greatest achievement, establishing the Cities of Refuge was an effort to allow for the strengthening of the Regency Courts built up by his predecessor. The creation of the Cities was largely make his plans for a stronger law enforcement among the nobility palatable for some powerful members of society. Creating the refuges from the courts for them to flee to should the courts turn against them proved successful in this regard. Initially created to suppress the worst of the endemic inter-house feuding; the Courts have become one of the most visible institutions of the Regency.

He is less well known for his reforms to the he started to the Regency Navy. Regents Zehle, Taylor, and Minimoto had done much to build the original Regency Navy into a defensive force around Regency worlds however it had little offensive strength. Regent Adolpho chose to change that by ordering the assembly of a powerful mobile taskforce that would later become the Imperial Fleet tasked with pirate eradication and peacekeeping. The first version of this taskforce was not completed until 4629.

While he was Regent, Adolpho’s brother, Duke Garzia Van Gelder consolidated Van Gelder assets around Cadiz, Praetor, Apshai, and Madoc. Unsustainable mining assets in the Pentateuch, Byzantium (Including Cumulus Station), and Leminkainen system were sold to rebuild the houses military and commercial fleet. House Van Gelders future was looking up when Adolpho stepped down in 4621, however less than a year later minor houses revolted on Praetor and the brothers mounted an offensive to restore the peace. Both brothers were on Praetor when the rebels cut that systems link with the Know Worlds.
