prepping for an Astra Militarum Campaign

Postby warhammerfrpgm » Mon Oct 22, 2018 9:46 pm

So I am prepping to start a new campaign. First time i will get to run any game in the 40k universe. I am used to and adept at running in warhammer(pre age of sigmar). I have played and run a variety of systems prior to now, but i have the complication of running a game for teenagers. My boys have reached gaming age and after my son started playing dungeons and dragons at school(they have an after school club) I thought it was time to dust off the only war campaign i wrote but never got to play.

I want to use the setting provided for in the Only war campaign book as I enjoy that setup a lot. It allows them to be pitted against other guard, Orks, possibly dark eldar and more. I can use it to slowly usher these neophyte warhammer kids into the universe we all love. In preparation I wanted to give some background thoughts on where the characters are from and what i have planned for my first several sessions. I'd love to give updates as the sessions progress.

The Astra Militarum regiment is from a little known system called Osha. Most characters will hail from either Osha Prime or Osha Segundus. Now i freely admit that i used the name Osha as a little joke for myself. because in the US government OSHA stands for occupational safety hazard administration, and nothing says occupational safety hazard like being in the guard. I have other jokes built in, mostly because i'm a smart ass. Their world was for a time cut off from most of the Imperium from a combination of warpstorms and a revolution taking place from when the regular citizens became aware that their leaders had fallen to the depravities of chaos. so, for the first time in several centuries Osha is once again providing regiments to the Imperium of Man. The first two of these regiments are the Osha 101st Armoured Regiment and the Osha 102nd Armoured Cavalry. The characters will be part of the 102nd. These Regiments are a bit overly bursting with bodies. They are the first regiments being tithed to the Imperium on over 4 centuries. The regiment boasts no less than 15 companies and ten platoons per company. this is almost 6 times the number for a standard regiment. combine that with some sentinels as part of regiment and a company of hellhounds mixed in for support you have a massive regiment. They could have broken up the regiment into multiple regiments, but having 10,000 men and over a 1000 vehicles available seemed like a good idea to go along with Roboute Guillaman's overall military reorganization. The 102nd is designated for urban deployment, suppression, and invasion. They have trained for rapid deployment from their Chimera troop transports and for sweeping buildings quickly. They especially like this role as they had to win their own freedom by utilizing similar tactics on their home world. While none of these recruits was involved in any of the freedom fighting, many of their officers and grizzled veterans were.

I decided to have the party be a weapon specialist team+add ons, from the 15th company and 10th platoon. so literally the bottom of the barrel. it helps to set in the sense of futility while still giving them hope to rise above a "reserve company" to part of the main fighting host. I have created characters for the special weapons team, the chimera crew, as well for an adeptus ministorum priest who is along to preach to the survivors of their first planetfall. I have also made 2 sisters for use as well. I made a sister hospitaller and adapted a t1 sister of battle.(and yes powerarmour seems ridiculous compared to the guardsmen.) I hope i don't need more than 9 characters. it sounds like i will have 7-8 players, but as many as 10. only making 12 possible PC's

Precampaign Update.

I have my old Only war adventure out and am looking to modify it to wrath and glory. I have a long planetary background for the character on their homeworld iwill have provided as this will hopefully help these young relatively new and new gamers get into character. I want them to feel the history of their homeworld a little bit. I have tried to incorporate a few Things to make it entertaining. The world they are from is recently returned to the imperial fold after a nasty civil war with chaos forces. Now that they can tithe regiments they are in droves. These boys are fresh recruits. Their training has taken place more on the six month warp travel journey than anywhere else. I will also give them information briefly on the imperium, warhammer40k, and their role as imperial guardsmen. There might even be a speech about the joy and challenge of wearing paper mache armor and fighting using flashlights against the horrors of the 41st millenium.

The first scene will start aboard the ship. The sisters and priest aren't there. the guys have been told be ready for coming out of warp to their destination. I have a long planetary background for the character on their homeworld i will have provided as this will hopefully help these young relatively new and new gamers get into character. They find out shortly there after that they missed the initial invasion of the planet and that the capital has just been taken by imperial forces in the last few days. They are late, but as those battle hardened forces move onto the next theater of war, this regiment gets to help put the pieces of the planet and population back together. They know that within a few months arbites, PDF from the next system over, and forces of the administratum will arrive and put more order in place. However, for now the Oshan 101st, and 102nd are the planetary defense and cleanup. There are still hotspots of Orks out there, and some sort of dissdent movement as well. Oshan's trained for urban take down and warfare. There is a small city in the largest bay of their Troop Ship the Primarchs Expeditious Charge that they have been doing simulated battles in for months. This space is large enough to even maneuver their vehicles around in.

after the initial disappointment of finding out they missed the fighting, they are quickly organized for transporting them, their gear, minimal belongings, and assigned vehicles to the Surface. The PC's are reminded that as part of a reserve company they will not be part of the few pockets of fighting, but will be given a secondary role. They will find more out when they land. This is the time for PC's to use some imfluence/wealth(would have been logistics in Only War) to try and see if they can get any extra gear for their upcoming mission. Not sure what they will try to ask for, but it should be interesting.

I will post more after the session next saturday. I hope that it is an exciting time for all. mostly i just want them to enjoy themselves.
